Biography

Robert "Bob" Nesta Marley (February 6, 1945 – May 11, 1981) was a Jamaican musician, singer-songwriter and Rastafarian. He was the lead singer, songwriter and guitarist for the ska, rocksteady and reggae bands: The Wailers (1964 – 1974) and Bob Marley & the Wailers (1974 – 1981). Marley remains the most widely known and revered performer of reggae music, and is credited for helping spread Jamaican music to the worldwide audience.
Marley's best known hits include "I Shot the Sheriff", "No Woman, No Cry", "Exodus", "Could You Be Loved", "Stir It Up", "Jamming", "Redemption Song", "One Love" and, together with The Wailers, ""Three Little Birds", as well as the posthumous releases "Buffalo Soldier" and "Iron Lion Zion". The compilation album, Legend, released in 1984, three years after his death, is the best-selling reggae album ever (10 times platinum), with sales of more than 12 million copies.

Religion

Bob Marley was a member of the Rastafari movement, whose culture was a key element in the development of reggae. Bob Marley became a leading proponent of the Rastafari, taking their music out of the socially deprived areas of Jamaica and onto the international music scene. Bob Marley was baptized by the Archbishop of the Ethiopian Orthodox Christian Church in Kingston, Jamaica on November 4, 1980. Marley was also a vegetarian.

Adwards and Honors

* 1976: Band of the Year (Rolling Stone)
* 1978: Awarded the Peace Medal of the Third World from the United Nations
* 1981: Awarded Jamaica's third highest honor, the Jamaican Order of Merit
* 1994: Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
* 1999: Album of the Century for Exodus
* 2001: A star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
* 2001: Awarded Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award
* 2004: Rolling Stone Magazine ranked him #11 on their list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time
* "One Love" named song of the millennium by The BBC
* Voted as one of the greatest lyricists of all time by a BBC poll.
* 2006: A plaque dedicated to him by Nubian Jak community trust and supported by Her Majesties Foreign Office.

Death and posthumous reputation

While flying home from Germany to Jamaica for his final days, Marley became ill, and landed in Miami for immediate medical attention. He died at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Miami, Florida on the morning of May 11, 1981 at the age of 36. The spread of melanoma to his lungs and brain caused his death. His final words to his son Ziggy were "Money can't buy life". Marley received a state funeral in Jamaica on May 21, 1981 which combined elements of Ethiopian Orthodoxy and Rastafari tradition. He was buried in a chapel near his birthplace with his Gibson Les Paul and a Bible. A month before his death, he was awarded the Jamaican Order of Merit. Marley was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. Time magazine chose Bob Marley & The Wailers' Exodus as the greatest album of the 20th century.

In 2001, Marley was posthumously awarded the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and a feature-length documentary about his life, Rebel Music, won various awards at the Grammys. With contributions from Rita, the Wailers, and Marley's lovers and children, it also tells much of the story in his own words.

In 2006, the State of New York renamed a portion of Church Avenue from Remsen Avenue to East 98th Street in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn "Bob Marley Boulevard".

This are quotes very famous of Bob Marley:

Bob Marley isn't my name. I don't even know my name yet.

Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our mind.

Emancipate yourselves from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds!

Every man gotta right to decide his own destiny.

Every time I plant a seed, He say kill it before it grow, he say kill it before they grow.

Get up, stand up, Stand up for your rights. Get up, stand up, Don't give up the fight.

Herb is the healing of a nation, alcohol is the destruction.

I don't stand for the black man's side, I don' t stand for the white man's side.I stand for God's side.

I've been here before and will come again, but I'm not going this trip through.

If you get down and quarell everyday, you're saying prayers to the devil, I say.

In this bright future you can't forget your past.

Life is one big road with lots of signs. So when you riding through the ruts, don't complicate your mind. Flee from hate, mischief and jealousy. Don't bury your thoughts, put your vision to reality. Wake Up and Live!

Man is a universe within himself.

Me only have one ambition, y'know. I only have one thing I really like to see happen. I like to see mankind live together - black, white, Chinese, everyone - that's all.

My future is righteousness.

My music fights against the system that teaches to live and die.

My music will go on forever. Maybe it's a fool say that, but when me know facts me can say facts. My music will go on forever.

None but ourselves can free our minds.

One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.

Open your eyes, look within. Are you satisfied with the life you're living?

People want to listen to a message, word from Jah. This could be passed through me or anybody. I am not a leader. Messenger. The words of the songs, not the person, is what attracts people.

Rastafari not a culture, it's a reality.

Tell the children the truth.

The good times of today, are the sad thoughts of tomorrow.

The harder the battle the sweet of jah victory.

The more people smoke herb, the more Babylon fall.

When one door is closed, don't you know, another is open.

When you smoke the herb, it reveals you to yourself.

You have to be someone.
